Care of Sugarloaf Shepherd Puppies

Once a Sugarloaf Shepherd - Always a Sugarloaf Shepherd

Once a puppy is born into the Sugarloaf Shepherd family, he (or she) is a Sugarloaf Shepherd for life. If there is ever a time that the buyer cannot keep a puppy bought from Sugarloaf Shepherds, the dog should never be given up to a shelter or a rescue group. The buyer should just let us know and we'll take the puppy (or grown dog) back. Our puppy sales contracts reinforce our promise that our Sugarloaf Shepherds will always have a home with us, if necessary, to ensure their protection in case dire circumstances arise.

Care of Sugarloaf Shepherd Puppies

Sugarloaf Shepherd puppies are bred with the objective of providing a puppy with intelligence and an outgoing friendly temperament, in addition to meeting the standard for breed conformation as close as possible. But, as great a puppy as we provide, the new owner cannot avoid the fact that any puppy is like a blank slate when introduced to its new home at the tender age of 8 weeks. Even the best puppy can be ruined by lack of attention or abuse, and puppies with fewer advantages at birth can become outstanding performers, given the best efforts at training and socialization.

The following documents and links give new puppy owners a head start at providing the best care for their new puppies:

Clicker Training - This refers to techniques for training your puppy using positive reinforcement, in preference to more classical dog training techniques that many modern trainers consider harsh and ineffective. The link is to the website maintained by Karen Pryor, who pioneered clicker training for dogs as well as other animals with phenomenal success. Clicker training promises to result in more than just an obedient dog - it promises to help build a strong satisfying relationship with your dog that will make both you and the dog happy and successful. Use of a clicker is encouraged. Clickers can be purchased inexpensively on this site.

ClickerSolutions.com - This is another website devoted to clicker training of dogs and other animals (even people). This site includes many free articles on variious aspects of training dogs.

Dog Owner's Guide - This is an online magazine all about dogs. I didn't review all the training articles, but for the several articles I did review, they seemed to be consistently advocating positive reinforcemetn and related training techniques, similar to that of clicker training.

Dominance Myth - Many publications on dog training, and many dog trainers, have based certain questionable training methods on the myth that the relationship between humans and their dogs revolves around the principle of the need for us to establish dominance over our canine companions. A good example of how this myth has snowballed in popularity is the TV show hosted by the "Dog Whisperer." An article titled Debunking the Dominance Myth by Carmen Buitrago describes how this myth came about and why it is foolish to follow advice dependent on it. Clicker Training does not support training practices that flow from this myth.
